Carol Truly - Visual Artist
I'm a self taught calligrapher and mixed media artist from Shreveport, LA. I moved to Dallas in 1995.
Drawn to art since childhood, I've enjoyed a wide range of hobbies including Chinese Brush painting and illustrating my original Haiku. In the late seventies, I focused on traditional forms of needlework. Inspired by antique alphabet samplers, I created my own heirloom sampler. The Latin quote "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis" was sewn into the design, meaning "Art-ts-long, Life is Short.”
Seven years ago I began a serious study of vintage styles of ornamental penmanship. My love of the beauty of Calligraphy led to teaching workshops on using pointed pens at The Creative Arts Center in Dallas. Branching out into collage, acrylics and assemblage, I've had fun combining my calligraphy onto mixed media projects.
Environmental themes weave throughout my work. Being a gardener, I've ' enjoyed embedding my dried ' botanical specimens into collage.
